Being in the Tri-Valley Hospitality business, it is rare that I get to experience something new.  Well, I had a new Tri-Valley wine country experience last Sunday, and wanted to share!

When I think of Chinese food, I very rarely think I will be having a culinary experience, but that is what I had at Uncle Yu’s at the Vineyard in Downtown Livermore.  They consider it “Innovative Chinese Cuisine”, and I have to agree.   Even better, they have their own sommelier, again a rare thing when you think of chinse food.

Sitting outside on their patio, we indulged with the  6-course Chef & Sommelier’s Tasting Menu, featuring Honey Glazed Calamari paired with a wonderful sparkling wine, lobster potstickers, tea steamed duck…all so amazing!

For wine lovers, experience their extraordinary collection of wine from some of the world’s best and rarest wineries, including Livermore Valley favorites.  Suggestions of pairing are made to compliment the distinctive flavors and unique characteristic of Chinese cuisine.

Uncle Yu’s was a great way to start our day of wine tasting in Livermore.

Make a reservation today by calling (925) 449 -7000 or visit them online at www.uncleyuatthevineyard.com

Update: I just received the menu from our lunch and had to post! YUMMO!

AN AFTERNOON AT UNCLE YU’S AT THE VINEYARD
    Sunday, June 07, 2009

    Honey Glazed Calamari
Coated & fried to golden brown, glazed with honey-cilantro Chili sauce
Brut, Gosset “Excellence”, Aÿ, Champagne NV
From the oldest Champagne house, 45% Pinot Noir (from Grand Cru & Premier Cru vineyards), 42% Chardonnay, 13% Pinot Meunier. It’s got 20% juice baring grand cru status, what a deal! Its reserve wine has a small amount of Fromenteau (Pinot Gris), Petit Meslier & Arbanne blended in it. They are indigenous to Champagne & almost extinct. Nice nose of brioche, figs, pear, almond & Hazelnut. Elegant and creamy textured with honey & citrus confit flavors.
Champagne or sparkling is the safest bet for Asian and Chinese cuisine! In this case the calamari dish is sweet, penetrating and spicy. The batter is crispy. The fizziness, crispness and acidity of the wine acts like a dissolving agent and makes everything so light, it melts in your mouth – comfort food at its best.

    Lobster Shumai & Wontons
Steamed & served with chicken consommé
Chardonnay, Kalin Cellars “Cuvée W”, Livermore Valley 1994
“One of the Top Ten Chardonnay Producers in California…If Kalin Cellars proprietor Terry Leighton were a     painter     instead of a molecular geneticist, he’d be Jackson Pollack. From speaking with him you know that he’s put theory, patient practice and resolve into his winemaking… In the winery Leighton follows the best (and riskiest) Burgundian farmyard tradition – small barrels and 100 percent malolactic fermentation and aging on the lees – to capture all of the wine’s flavors. He then leaves the wine unfiltered to preserve it. This is California winemaking with a European style – like handcrafted Meursault from a ripe vintage.” _ Wesson and Rosengarten, Food and Wine Companion
The dish needs a powerful but balanced kind of a chardonnay or White Burgundy. This wine is powerful, deep and refine yet not overly oaky so it fits the bill. There is an ocean of chardonnays out there that don’t, due to their cocktail like over powering oakiness.

Pork and Shrimp Home Style Pan-Fried Wontons
Sugar peas, celery, mushrooms, sweet bell peppers and Yu-Shang spicy sauce
Savennières Roche Aux Moines “Chateau de Chamboreau,
Chevalier Buhard, Daux” – Grand Cru, Pierre Soulez,  Anjou–Saumur, Loire 1999
From the village of Savennières, this one is made from a famous, very steep slope vineyard situated in a very significant spot in the Loire Valley – on the local schist veined with volcanic rock. Full-bodied, complex, luscious boasting honey, orchard fruit, lanolin flavors. Versatile with hot hot cuisine!
The residual of the wine is generous and broad enough to tame the heat as well as balance out the different spices of the dish. The hidden acidity of the wine also matches that of the dish, so the two complement each other!

    Exotic Bomba
Mango, passion fruit and raspberry sorbetto dipped in white chocolate
Vin du Bugey-Cerdon “La Cueille”, Patrick Bottex, Savoie NV
Made of Gamay and the way like how a Moscato d’Asti is done, it is slightly sparkling and totally original with flavors of strawberries & raspberries, from Savoie high in the French Alps.
The sparkling nature and the grape varietal of the wine make it extremely versatile with food.
Ice cream and sorbet are some of most difficult for wine pairing, yet this one handles the dish so easily! The experience is like fire works in your mouth…bursting with flavor, then magically vanishing slowly, leaving you wanting more!

    Nursery day trip: Livermore, CA

    By: Abigail Peterson

    Alden Lane Nursery

Why go now: Spring doesn’t get any better than this. Grapevines leafing out and roses in mad bloom leave you itching to get your hands in the earth.

The new agriculture: Wine and rodeos put Livermore on the map, but now everyone’s talking about olive oil and backyard veggie gardens.

Number of olive oil producers: 10

Overheard at the nursery:“What’s the kind of pomegranate in the juice again? ‘Wonderful’? Let’s get one of those trees!”

Need coffee? Sketch out planting plans downtown at Panama Red Coffee Co. (2115 First St.; 925/245-1700). Great chai too.

Best outdoor meal: Sunday brunch or sunset supper (with plenty of local produce) on the patio at the Restaurant at Wente Vineyards ($$$$; 5050 Arroyo Rd.; 925/456- 2450).

More tastes of sunshine: Locals say the farmstand near the corner of Concannon Boulevard and South Livermore Avenue has the sweetest strawberries mid-April through June. If you see signs, it’s open.

Four reasons to visit Alden Lane Nursery

Del Valle Regional Park is a perfect spot to check out the spring wildflowers!

Del Valle Regional Park is a perfect spot to check out the spring wildflowers!

So, wait, so far we have only spent $7.75! Next, to Del Valle Regional Park.   Deep in a valley framed by oak-covered hills, with sailboats and sailboards skimming over its waters, Del Valle is like a lakeside resort only 10 miles south of Livermore.  It’s $6 per vehicle to enter the the park, but it’s ABSOLUTELY worth the trip.   And, if you can rent a canoe or paddle boat for only $10 for 2 hours. But, wait….that would make our total $23.75.  Hmm…maybe this should be titled, A Fun Day Trip for Under $25??

As always, you can find information on fun things to do on the Tri-Valley Convention & Visitor Bureau website, including special offers, and an event calendar for the region.

So, I just finished reading an article in a national newspaper (it shall not be named) where the wine editor suggested a $380 bottle of sparkling wine in her list of Valentine Wines.   WOW! I don’t know about you, but even the most celebrated wine lovers have got to be scaling back during this recession.  I know that this year, I am watching every dime I spend on food & wine. I plan on making a nice valentine dinner on saturday night, based on a recipe that I got from Casa Real at Ruby Hill Winery.   This Valentines day I am planning on making a trip out to Livermore Valley wine country to pick up a few bottles  without a hefty price tag and pairing it with a recipe for Wine Braised Beef Short Ribs & Creamy Polenta.

We’ll start start with Ruby Hill Winery’s Champagne for only $13.00 California- This sparkling wine is excellent for a special celebration like Valentines Day! It has an aromatic, toasty nose with a very fine bead and pale gold color. Flavors of lemon and melon with a smooth creamy texture.  I think I’ll pair it with a nice earthy appetizer, like stuffed mushrooms.

With dinner, both to drink & for the recipe below,  I plan on purchasing the Ruby Hill 2006 Merlot Reserve for $30.00 Monterey- Aged in French and American oak barrels for 18 months, this rich, smooth wine has aromas of plum, black cherry and pepper and are accentuated by notes of cedar and leather.

    Happy Valentines Day!!

    Beautiful new winery McGrail Vineyards

    Beautiful new winery McGrail Vineyards

To celebrate my birthday this past December, my friends and I spent the day wine tasting in Livermore Valley wine country .  Sure, it was POURING rain that day, but we trekked through it in my trusty Subaru Outback!  A little mud never hurt and the cold weather and rain didn’t seem to deter fellow wine lovers either! It was actually packed in some of the smaller tasting rooms like Page Mill Winery.

Our itinerary included lunch and 4 winery stops, lots of laughter and some fantastic wine that purchased for last minute Christmas presents!

Lunch: Firehouse Bistro & Books, Livermore

This restaurant located in Downtown Livemore blew me away! The original firehouse building that served Livermore from 1906 to 1976 and was completely renovated as a restaurant in 2007.  The concept, part book store, part restaurant is unique. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, lots of wood paneling, and cozy banquets.  I had the Buffalo Bill’s Spicy Chicken sandwich with Grilled chicken breast with tangy hot sauce, blue cheese vinaigrette, zesty slaw, sliced tomatoes & smoked bacon. Sooo delicious!  My friends had the Croque Monsieur and the The WMD (chicken salad wrap).  We all shared an amazing goat cheese appetizer, served in olive  oil with olives and toasted bread. YUM!!   A great start to the day.

Winery Stop 1: Page Mill Winery, 1960 S. Livermore Ave. in Livermore.

Dane Stark, the winemaker at Page Mill Winery, is one of the nicest people you’ll ever meet. True, he gets to spend his saturdays in a tasting room interacting with happy wine lovers, but he’s part of the reason the folks are so happy!  A huge part of the experience is the tasting room atmosphere, dark blood red walls and drapes  and a crystal chandlier are right out of a french bordello but in a good good way!  Sure it’s small and it was crowded that day, but totally worth it!  We tasted off the reds flight, and ended up purchasing the 2006 Petite Sirah, Estate Vineyard Livermore Valley. SILVER MEDAL 2009 SF Chronicle Wine Competition $38.

The winerey is open from noon until 4:30pm every Saturday and Sunday

Winery Stop 2: Charles R Vineyards, 8195 Crane Ridge Road, Livermore

Ok, maybe I am a particularly partial to this winery because I LOVE their 2007 Chardonnay. I had to bring my friends here, if not for the atmosphere and “off the grid” feel to the winery.  Sure, it’s down a dirt road at the end of Greenville, but heck, this is the only off-roading my outback gets!  Lovely tasting room, delicious wines and family friendly atmosphere (we saw little kids playing with toys provided by the winery in the corner), it is a definite DO!  If you love chardonnay, definitely head out there and purchase the 2007 Chardonnay!   This chardonnay was barrel fermented, 100% malolactic fermentation, and given prolonged lees contact and stirring (batonnage) to generate a more fruitful flavor. If you don’t hurry…I may have to go buy up the rest! It’s so good!  Open Friday-Sunday 12 – 4:30 pm

Winery Stop 3: McGrail Vineyards, 5600 Greenville Rd, Livermore

A new winery? Sort of.  The folks at McGrail have been providing Cabernet grapes to local wineries for over 4 years.  Then they figured, why let everyone else have all the fun? The tasting room opened this past summer and already it is becoming a great new stop in Livermore Valley.  They focus on Cabernet only, but they do it so so well!  Also, their tasting room is gorgeous.  Don’t be intimitated by the family dog, Bear.  He’s probably the biggest German Shepard I have ever seen, but he is all warm & fuzzy!   Check them out…they are open 12-4:30pm Fri-Sun.

Winery Stop 4: Crooked Vine & Stoney Ridge, 4948 Tesla Rd, Livermore

Ah, the final stop.  Sure, we were tired and my friend Andi was a little tipsy…so thankfully we noshed on the pretzels and mustard sample at the tasting room.  We tried the Crooked Vine flight, and were pretty impressed with the selection…although it was a LONG flight.  Standouts were the Petit Sirah, so I bought a few bottles for x-mas gifts.  My friend bought the sparkling wine, which apparently she loves and gave as christmas gifts.  A good solid winery stop and in the summer the outdoor patio is probably a great way to spend the afternoon! Hours are Sat-Sunday noon – 4:30 pm.
