2008 Wente Vineyards Morning Fog Chardonnay

Add Wente’s Morning Fog Chardonnay to your list of Summer white favorites.

Wente’s Morning Fog Chardonnay is a nice refresher on a warm summer evening. Named after the San Francisco summer fog that pockets in the Livermore Valley, creating a rare Mediterranean climate – found in less than 1% of the world’s land mass. Wente describes this Chardonnay, as having the aromas and flavors of green apple and tropical fruits, balanced by subtle oak, cinnamon and vanilla from barrel aging. With a mouth-filling body and balanced acidity, this wine delivers a medium-long, refreshing finish. Cheers!

Chardonnay - the perfect summer beverage

Looking for the perfect white wine to celebrate the first day of Summer? Look no further than a crisp, cool glass of Chardonnay from Livermore Valley Wine Country.  The morning fog that lingers over the valley floor makes it a superb location for Chardonnay, and in fact many of the great Chardonnay vineyards in California are planted with the Wente Clone.  The Wente clone is budwood that is used to plant chardonnay at many California winemakers. In 1912, a member of the Wente family took cuttings from the University of Montpellier viticultural nursery in France. Cuttings from the Wente vineyard then spread to a number of other wineries before eventually being certified by the Foundation Plant Materials Service of the University of California, Davis.

This summer here are some of my picks for Livermore’s best Chardonnay.  What is your favorite?

Wente Vineyards 2008 Riva Ranch Chardonnay

This medium- bodied Chardonnay has a rich, golden color and aromas and flavors of honey, graham, cinnamon and light floral notes, balanced by subtle oak, butter and vanilla from barrel aging.  It has a round mouthfeel and a long, fruity finish. Buy it now

Wood Family Vineyards 2008 Chardonnay “Para Mas Amigas” Livermore Valley

Winemaker Rhonda Wood made this wine for her girlfriends who kept requesting a Chardonnay to drink.  Her high school Spanish only took her so far, so instead of creating a wine “for my girlfriends,” she created a wine “for more girlfriends.” And, pouring this decadent wine will surely win you more girlfriends indeed! With aromas of sautéed pears perched atop creamy custard, it is broadened by the clean smell of wet stone and the warmth of toasted pepita pumpkin seed. The wine’s interest continues on the palate with rich braised fennel, preserved lemons and grapefruit foam. Clearly it is a food wine with its medium to medium plus acidity providing great balance to the fruit. The long finish brings you right back around to the warm pepitas enjoyed at the start. Buy it now

Charles R 2007 Chardonnay Sur Lies

Enticing floral aromas and luscious soft mouthfeel. Subtle flavors of oak, honey, and toasty graham, followed by a smooth finish.  This chardonnay was barrel fermented, 100% malolactic fermentation, and given prolonged lees contact and stirring (batonnage) to generate a more fruitful flavor.  Buy it now

This is just a brief list, but tell us which Livermore Chardonnay’s you love!
