Concannon Mini Reuben

Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with this modern take on classic Corned Beef and Cabbage. The recipe, which calls for either deli or homemade corned beef, offers a perfect menu for toasting with friends. Pair with Petite Sirah from the foremost Irish/American winery, Concannon Vineyard , whose founder was born on St. Pat’s day in 1847.

Concannon Mini-Reuben with Caraway Slaw, Roasted Garlic Aioli and Irish Cheddar
Prep time 30 min
Serving One
Recommended Wine Pairing: 2005 Concannon Petite Sirah
1 small clove of garlic, peeled
1 tablespoon Concannon Petite Sirah
1/4 teaspoon of olive oil
1 teaspoon water
Dill sprig
4 teaspoons Concannon Petite Sirah
2 tablespoons chicken stock (canned or boxed)
1/8 teaspoon caraway seeds
Pinch salt
1 cup store-bought shredded cabbage (e.g., Fresh Express or Dole cole
slaw)
1/4 teaspoon Concannon Petite Sirah
1 tablespoon Roasted Garlic Aioli (recipe below)
1/4 of a whole bay leaf
2 slices cocktail rye bread
4 thin slices of corned beef (deli or homemade)
1/4 teaspoon of sugar
Concannon Roasted Garlic Aioli
Pre-heat oven to 425F°. Place garlic clove in ovenproof container; add 1 tablespoon Concannon Petite Sirah, the olive oil, water. Cover with foil,
roast for 20-25 minutes, or until it can be easily pierced. Remove and cool. Mash garlic with any remaining cooking liquid; stir garlic, dill, ¼ tsp wine into aioli. Set aside; reduce oven temperature to 375°F.

Concannon Caraway Slaw
In a saucepan, place bay leaf, sugar, 4 tsp Concannon Petite Sirah, chicken stock, caraway seeds, salt and cabbage. Toss to coat cabbage.
Cover and bring to quick boil, then reduce heat to low, keeping covered until cabbage wilts, about 30 seconds. Uncover, turn up heat to medium
and boil away liquids, about 2 minutes. Discard bay leaf.

Assembly
Spread rye bread with 3/4 tablespoon aioli. Add slaw then place corned beef folded on top. Add one slice Irish Cheddar. Heat sandwich open
faced in oven for 5 minutes or until cheddar melts, cover with second slice of rye bread if desired.

Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in Irish style at Concannon Vineyards Founder’s Day 2010 Celebration!  The event is in honor of  founder James Concannon’s birthday, St. Patrick’s Day, March 17, 1847.  The event will feature music on the lawn featuring The Cooltones, a Big Band Jazz from the San Francisco Bay Area! The show starts at 1:30 PM.  Other fun festivities include gourmet picnic fare for purchase by Barbara Llewellyn Catering and  a Bottle Signing from 11:00AM-1:00PM with 3rd and 4th Generation Vintners Jim and John Concannon.

With a legacy for excellence dating back to 1883, Concannon Vineyard is known worldwide for its award-winning wines, as well as its historic role in the wine industry. Irish immigrant JamesConcannon was drawn to the gravelly soil of Livermore more than a century and a quarter ago. A true pioneer, he crossed the country in a covered wagon and settled his family first in Oregon, then later in California. James Concannon planted the country’s first Petit Sirah vines in 1911 and for half a century the grapes were used primarily for blending. At their customers’ insistence, the winery bottled its first Petit Sirah in 1964 and continues to focus on this popular varietal today.

In 2009, the winery renovated their  tasting room.  The dramatically remodeled tasting room has been enlarged (nearly doubling capacity)
to make it more comfortable for guests who can also meander outside to sip wine al fresco on the brand new patio while listening to the sounds of the outdoor fountain created from historic Livermore stamped brick. A park-like setting and fresh flowers make this a welcome respite especially on a sunny day.  Additionally, the winery is the official site of the summertime Livermore Shakespeare Festival, which will be featuring the classic “Romeo & Juliet” in 2010.

Perfect wine for chilly winter nights

PLEASANTON, CA – December 16, 2009 – The Tri-Valley, California Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB) www.trivalleycvb.com, a sales and marketing organization dedicated to promoting a five-city region in San Francisco’s East Bay, today unveiled the Livermore Valley Wine Winter Starter Kit. Designed to make it simple for wine enthusiasts near and far to celebrate with festive wines this holiday and winter season, the Starter Kit contains top picks from the valley’s winemakers themselves.

Tri-Valley residents who shop and buy locally will find comfort in sipping local wines. While beyond the backyard, people who expect wines that are undiscovered yet delicious, will appreciate the introduction to many of the boutique wines found in the Livermore Valley.

Located only an hour from three major airports (SFO, SJO, OAK), 42 Livermore Valley wineries are nestled amongst stunning rolling hills, making California’s Tri-Valley region an ideal destination for wine vacations.

From vine to table, many of the wines born in the Livermore Valley are undiscovered gems, while others stem from historically significant, familiar labels, such as Concannon Vineyards, or Wente Vineyards – the country’s oldest continuously operated family-owned winery.

Winemaker Recommendations

As the days grow brisk and the nights chilly, it’s no surprise that the valley’s winemakers and executives behind the Winter Starter Kit are lining up for reds, with Rhone-style wines, such as Syrah and Petite Sirah, grabbing their attention.

Concannon Vineyard was the first winery to release Petite Sirah in 1964. An iconic label for Rhone varietals, their Petite Sirah is a favorite of Winemaker Wayne Re of Garré Winery & Vineyard, “It has an excellent nose and fruity flavor that goes well with either red meat or poultry.”

White Crane Winery Winemaker Nick Nardolillo recommends Wood Family Vineyards Syrah,“It’s a great red wine that pairs well with a lot of Holiday dishes.”

“I recommend Garré Syrah. It shows some really nice cooler climate tendencies with a touch of red berries on the nose, hints of creaminess and just a touch of bacon,” said Nicolas Tucker, director of marketing, Underdog Wine Merchants. “It went nicely with the spaghetti bolognese that I had at Garré’s café this week.”

Chris Graves, Winemaker for Ruby Hill Winery, founded in 1887, recommends La Rochelle 2007 Pinot Noir Classic Clones, “It’s lovely, elegant, yet rich pinot, great pairing for most winter dinners, including turkey, fish or game. Delicious wine!”

Another fan of Wood Family Vineyards is Heather McGrail,Owner, McGrail Vineyards and Winery, “Wood Family Old Vine Zinfandel is a great wine to enjoy while sitting by the fire, relaxing and unwinding from the hectic holiday buzz. This wine doesn’t need to be paired with food, but it also compliments most meals.”

“Cabernet works during the winter months, in my opinion, because of the classic flavors associated with this wine. I appreciate BoaVentura’s estate grown cab. Currant, plum, black cherry and subtle spice coupled with soft jammy notes create a supple elegant wine that works in harmony with the holiday theme,” offers Rodrigue-Molyneaux Winery’s Dan Silva, apprentice winemaker and tasting room manager.

Most Wines Are Under $25

Wallet-minded consumers will be pleased to note that all of the 15 wines in the Starter Kit are under $50, and within this affordable lot, 7 wines are under $20, while the bulk of them, 12 wines, are priced at $25 or less. Considering that the winemakers were asked to select their favorite wines — with no regard for price — consumers can have confidence that affordability is not at the expense of quality.

Beautiful new winery McGrail Vineyards

Beautiful new winery McGrail Vineyards

To celebrate my birthday this past December, my friends and I spent the day wine tasting in Livermore Valley wine country .  Sure, it was POURING rain that day, but we trekked through it in my trusty Subaru Outback!  A little mud never hurt and the cold weather and rain didn’t seem to deter fellow wine lovers either! It was actually packed in some of the smaller tasting rooms like Page Mill Winery.

Our itinerary included lunch and 4 winery stops, lots of laughter and some fantastic wine that purchased for last minute Christmas presents!

Lunch: Firehouse Bistro & Books, Livermore

This restaurant located in Downtown Livemore blew me away! The original firehouse building that served Livermore from 1906 to 1976 and was completely renovated as a restaurant in 2007.  The concept, part book store, part restaurant is unique. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, lots of wood paneling, and cozy banquets.  I had the Buffalo Bill’s Spicy Chicken sandwich with Grilled chicken breast with tangy hot sauce, blue cheese vinaigrette, zesty slaw, sliced tomatoes & smoked bacon. Sooo delicious!  My friends had the Croque Monsieur and the The WMD (chicken salad wrap).  We all shared an amazing goat cheese appetizer, served in olive  oil with olives and toasted bread. YUM!!   A great start to the day.

Winery Stop 1: Page Mill Winery, 1960 S. Livermore Ave. in Livermore.

Dane Stark, the winemaker at Page Mill Winery, is one of the nicest people you’ll ever meet. True, he gets to spend his saturdays in a tasting room interacting with happy wine lovers, but he’s part of the reason the folks are so happy!  A huge part of the experience is the tasting room atmosphere, dark blood red walls and drapes  and a crystal chandlier are right out of a french bordello but in a good good way!  Sure it’s small and it was crowded that day, but totally worth it!  We tasted off the reds flight, and ended up purchasing the 2006 Petite Sirah, Estate Vineyard Livermore Valley. SILVER MEDAL 2009 SF Chronicle Wine Competition $38.

The winerey is open from noon until 4:30pm every Saturday and Sunday

Winery Stop 2: Charles R Vineyards, 8195 Crane Ridge Road, Livermore

Ok, maybe I am a particularly partial to this winery because I LOVE their 2007 Chardonnay. I had to bring my friends here, if not for the atmosphere and “off the grid” feel to the winery.  Sure, it’s down a dirt road at the end of Greenville, but heck, this is the only off-roading my outback gets!  Lovely tasting room, delicious wines and family friendly atmosphere (we saw little kids playing with toys provided by the winery in the corner), it is a definite DO!  If you love chardonnay, definitely head out there and purchase the 2007 Chardonnay!   This chardonnay was barrel fermented, 100% malolactic fermentation, and given prolonged lees contact and stirring (batonnage) to generate a more fruitful flavor. If you don’t hurry…I may have to go buy up the rest! It’s so good!  Open Friday-Sunday 12 – 4:30 pm

Winery Stop 3: McGrail Vineyards, 5600 Greenville Rd, Livermore

A new winery? Sort of.  The folks at McGrail have been providing Cabernet grapes to local wineries for over 4 years.  Then they figured, why let everyone else have all the fun? The tasting room opened this past summer and already it is becoming a great new stop in Livermore Valley.  They focus on Cabernet only, but they do it so so well!  Also, their tasting room is gorgeous.  Don’t be intimitated by the family dog, Bear.  He’s probably the biggest German Shepard I have ever seen, but he is all warm & fuzzy!   Check them out…they are open 12-4:30pm Fri-Sun.

Winery Stop 4: Crooked Vine & Stoney Ridge, 4948 Tesla Rd, Livermore

Ah, the final stop.  Sure, we were tired and my friend Andi was a little tipsy…so thankfully we noshed on the pretzels and mustard sample at the tasting room.  We tried the Crooked Vine flight, and were pretty impressed with the selection…although it was a LONG flight.  Standouts were the Petit Sirah, so I bought a few bottles for x-mas gifts.  My friend bought the sparkling wine, which apparently she loves and gave as christmas gifts.  A good solid winery stop and in the summer the outdoor patio is probably a great way to spend the afternoon! Hours are Sat-Sunday noon – 4:30 pm.
